How to upgrade the firmware on a Sennheiser OfficeRunner

There is no information on the internet on how to upgrade the firmware on a Sennheiser OfficeRunner. All available information is on the DW series, which does not apply to the OfficeRunner.

You can upgrade the firmware using the Sennheiser HeadSetup software that is normally used to connect the OfficeRunner to a softphone such as the 3CX IP PBX softphone.

Instructions

  1. Download and install the Sennheiser HeadSetup software.
  2. Right-click the new HeadSetup tray icon and select Open.
  3. Click the Updates tab.
  4. Click the Check for update button.
  5. This process will also validate your current firmware version.

Google Chat with Pidgin Broken

Problem

We recently had some network issues which caused the Pidgin Universal Chat, or Google Chat, client to break.

Help at the Pidgin site produced the answer but I thought I’d give the short version here without you having to search through their FAQ as did I.

  1. Start Pidgin
  2. Show Buddy List
  3. Accounts > the Appropriate Account > Manage Account
  4. Advanced Tab
  5. Connect Server = “talk.google.com” (See image)
  6. Save

HOWTO: Export a list with SP

When you try to export a SharePoint list you get an error messages saying it can’t be done.

“To export a list, you must have a Microsoft SharePoint Foundation-compatible application.”

Searching this error message easily finds the root of the problem. There is a problem with the Office 64 bit version. It doesn’t work with SP. These solutions generally tell you to uninstall your 64 bit office and install a 32 bit version. Happily there is a much easier solution.

Despite the error message the export actually works! Notice the yellow bar at the bottom of your browser. Simply save the .iqy file normally and open it with Excel. It’s that simple. The error message is certainly a nuisance but does not actually stop the export.

Windows Remote Host Licensing Mode

Server 2012’s Terminal Server services are proving to be much different than prior versions of windows. The initial remote desktop based roles wizard is easier to use, but making changes after they are installed can be a hassle.

A lot of the configuration is done in Server Manager -> Remote Desktop Services -> Deployment Overview -> Tasks -> Edit Deployment Properties.

Solution

The setting that I missed was one under RD Licensing -> Select the Remote Desktop licensing mode: Per Device or Per User.

After activating our licensing for Enterprise Agreement for Windows 8 VDI Per Device CAL’s, I assumed that the licensing mode would default to Per Device. It did not, and remote desktop did not work to VM’s on the terminal server.

Be aware that if you have the licensing server installed and activated that these items do not default to the CAL’s you purchased and configured. This applies to RD virtualization host and session host roles.

SOLVED: SFTP Fatal in Selinux Log

Problem

When trying to configure sftp, you encounter “fatal: safely_chroot permission denied” in your SElinux audit.log.

Problem Scenario:

When you disable selinux with setenforce 0, sftp works.

When you enable selinux with setenforce 1, sftp fails and gives an error like:
Aug 7 18:01:19 server1 sshd[36015]: fatal: safely_chroot: stat(“/var/www”): Permission denied

Important facts:

You must have:
setsebool -P ssh_chroot_rw_homedirs=1
This will often error if you have an sftp user that also has a login shell (a big no-no), set it to /sbin/nologin with:
usermod -s /sbin/nologin mySFTPUser

But sftp still won’t work because the internal SELinux policies don’t allow sftp chroot. Create a custom SELinux policy to allow the chroot using audit2allow:
yum install setroubleshoot (to get audit2allow)

or

yum install policycoreutils-python (alternate package with audit2allow)
cd /root
grep chroot_user_t /var/log/audit/audit.log | audit2allow -M sftp_chroot_custom_policy > sftp_chroot_custom_policy.text
semodule -i sftp_chroot_custom_pol.pp

NOTE: The normal out put of this would be the .pp file generated by the -M flag. The .text file contains the human readable equivalent. You must use the .pp binary file with the semodule -i command.

This applies to Centos 6. It may apply to other Linux operating systems.

How to add a SSL certificate to a SonicWALL SSL-VPN

SSL: Create system backup first… !

SSL Solution:SSL

  1. Open up the SSL-VPN web management interface.
    1. Under SYSTEM, click CERTIFICATES (here you can generate a CSR and import certifictes).
  2. On the Generate Certificate Signing Request (CSR) page, enter the details about your organization’s legal business name and location. Then enter the other following information:
    1. For Name: Enter an alias (aka friendly name).
    2. For Domain Name (FQDN): enter the name you are securing (what is typed in the web browser)
    3. For Key Length (bits): choose at least 2048
    4. For City enter SAINT LOUIS — not St. Louis
    5. For State type out Missouri — not MO
    6. Enter a password
    7. click Submit…
  3. Then if prompted if you want to save or open the file csr.zip choose to save the file, then from the ZIP file extract the two files (server.csr and server.key). Rename server.csr to server.txt. Save the server.key file for later use.
  4. Order your SSL Certificate, and copy the contents of server.txt when prompted for your server’s CSR. I am using GoDaddy as the example. When it’s ready, download the certificate in the Apache format. You will receive two files, one with your cert and the other contains the Intermediate certificates.
  5. You’ll have to combine the two certs into one file. Open the Intermediate cert file in Notepad, and copy all text. Open your server cert file and paste in the copied text BENEATH what’s already there. Save it and make sure it’s named server.crt. Next, combine server.crt with the server.key file from step 3 into a flat ZIP file (flat meaning no subfolders), and then Import the zip file into the SSL-VPN in the location from step 1, and enter in the password you created in step 2. The device will restart (20 seconds) and then click the Default Certificte button to make it active. Test. Done.

SOLVED: DCPromo Config Wizard Site List

When running dcpromo on Windows Server 2012 in a new site in an existing domain, the Site Name dropdown is empty.  When any page in the wizard is incomplete, you cannot continue.  This post found a resolution.

When you run dcpromo, you begin to see the “Active Directory Domain Services Configuration Wizard.  This wizard automatically detects your domain and suggests the appropriate domain selections.  This includes asking you which site should contain this new domain controller.  In prior versions of dcpromo, you set the site after installing the domain controller using AD Sites and Services.

In our case, we noticed that the sites were listed correctly, but we wanted to create a new site so we could select it in this dropdown.  We exited dcpromo, went to an existing domain controller, ran AD Sites and Services, and created the new site.

Next we returned to dcpromo on our target server and found that our new site wasn’t in the wizard.  We figured this was a replication issue and went to lunch.  When we came back, the site name still wouldn’t appear in the wizard, so we restarted the target server.

Now when we ran dcpromo, the site list was completely blank.  dcpromo clearly saw our domain by the other detections, but would no longer list the sites.  So, we changes DNS servers on the target server to use alternate DCs, but no change.

After seeing that Google had nothing to offer but hundreds of “How to run dcpromo” blogs, we started clicking around in dcpromo to see if we could make something work.  We tried selecting the domain, even though the detections showed our proper domain.  The domain selector showed some hexadecimal string that we presume was the hex value representation of our domain “mycompany.local”.  We selected this just to see if it fixed anything and found that it actually selected the hex value, not the domain string – and the wizard would not continue.

We then typed in our actual domain name in the domain textbox and clicked Next.

Now the Site Name selection list had our Sites listed correctly.

EDIT:  We realized after the fact that the corresponding site subnet entry has the wrong subnet mask.  We don’t know if this was the cause of the problem or just coincident.

Virtual Machine Fails to Respond to Network Traffic

The following issue pertains to an environment running a Windows 2012 Server Failover Cluster. This cluster had 3 nodes, each node running 4 VMs, running stably for months.

Suddenly one afternoon the virtual machines on one of the nodes failed to respond to network traffic. Looking at the VMs in the Failover Cluster Manager, they showed a status of “Running – locked”. Then VMs on that node began shutting down. They did not fail over to another node. The Clustered Shared Volume could not be browsed in Windows Explorer from the affected node. The iSCSI connector showed that the server’s connection to the SAN was up, however.

The Failover Cluster Manager showed the following critical errors: “Cluster Shared Volume ‘Volume1’ (‘name’) is no longer available on this node because of ‘STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT(c00000b5)’. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.”

Earlier that afternoon, I had created a new virtual machine on that node. After creating it, I decided to back up the new VM using Microsoft DPM 2012. While I was doing so, that’s when the failure occurred. I discovered after a few minutes of research that it was this action—backing up a clustered virtual machine—that caused the problem. I stopped the DPM backup (which was hung anyway), deleted the job, and restarted the affected Cluster Node server. The VMs ran normally after that.

According to Microsoft, here are the conditions:

Consider the following scenario:

  • You enable the Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) feature on a Windows Server 2012-based failover cluster.
  • Create a virtual machine on a CSV volume on a cluster node.
  • Start the virtual machine.
  • Try to create a backup of the virtual machine on the CSV volume by using Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM).

In this scenario, one of the following issues occurs:

  • The backup is created, and the virtual machine enters a paused state.
  • The CSV volume goes offline. Therefore, the virtual machine goes offline, and the backup is not created.

Errors: Software snapshot creation on Cluster Shared Volume(s) (‘volume location’) with snapshot set id ‘snapshot id’ failed with error ‘HrError(0x80042308)(2147754760)’. Please check the state of the CSV resources and the system events of the resource owner nodes.

I have some regular emails I send and I don’t like having to go to the Developer Tab, click Choose Form, Choose User Templates in File System, and then double-click the form in question. That’s way too many steps for this lazy user.

There is some very simple VBA code that will do this and then you can add the button to a Custom Tab. Here’s how.

Exchange 2007 services won’t start after Windows Update

Problem:

This particular problem is caused by installing KB2756918 on a Server 2003 x64 machine running Exchange 2007. I don’t know the specifics, I just know how to fix it.

Windows Update Solution:

First you have to rename two “machine.config” files located in C:\windows\microsoft.net\framework64\v2.0xxx\config and C:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0xxx\config Rename machine.config to machine.config.old and copy machine.config.default in the same directory and rename the default config file to “machine.config”. Make sure to do this in both directories.

Reboot the server and your Exchange transport service should be able to start.

If your OWA doesn’t come back up and you get a message “service unavailable” even after a few iisreset commands you may have to re-register .net v2.0 with IIS. To do this enter the aspnet_regiis.exe command with the –I flag. Here’s an example for my directory structure.

C:\windows\microsoft.net\framework64\v2.05727\aspnet_regiis.exe –i

After that, restart IIS and check to see if your OWA is working. Send a couple test messages and make sure to hide KB2756918 from being installed on the server to avoid this issue in the future.

HOWTO: Fix Broken Hyperlinks in Outlook

After you uninstall Google Chrome, you will notice that Outlook broken hyperlinks are visible, due to bad registry.

Solution for Outlook Broken Hyperlinks:

To fix this problem you need to restore several registry settings in the User Profile.

  1. Click Start, click Run, type Regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the following subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.html
  3. On the File menu, click Export.
  4. In the Export Registry File dialog box, enter HKCU_Classes_HTML_Backup.reg and click Save.
    • Note: This will create a backup of this registry key in the My Documents folder by default.
  5. Right click the (Default) value for the .html key and select Modify…
  6. Change the value from “ChromeHTML” to “htmlfile”

Repeat steps 1-6 for .htm and .shtml keys if they exist, remember to change the name of your backup file for each export.

Sharepoint 2007 Document Library Files Missing

 

Missing Library Files

If you are missing library files as if they’ve been deleted, first check the recycle bin.

All instructions are for SharePoint 2007. Different versions will require different instructions.

  1. From the top-level site select “site actions”, click “site settings”, click “modify all site settings”
  2. Click “Recycle Bin” under “site central administration”
  3. Make sure to check the end user recycle bin and the “deleted from end user recycle bin”

Next make sure the View wasn’t altered to Filter for an item that doesn’t exist.

  1. Go to the List in Question
  2. From the View drop-down choose Modify this View
  3. Scroll down to the Filters Section
  4. Verify that Show all items in this view is selected

If the documents are not listed in the recycle bin or filtered to not appear it’s possible that the view has become corrupted.

Missing Library Files Solution:

You should create a new view for the document library and make it the default view.

  1. Go to the List in Question
  2. From the View drop-down choose Create View
  3. Name the View as desired
  4. Make it the default view
  5. Save the view

If your documents are now visible then you will want to go back and delete the corrupted view.

No DNS/DHCP After Virus Removal

Recently, after removing a virus from a customer’s PC I encountered a problem while trying to get the PC back on the network. I tested the drop with another computer and it worked fine. The PC would not pull a DHCP address. I then gave the PC a static IP/DNS settings and the PC was able to ping 8.8.8.8 (which means it had access to the internet) but could not resolve google.com with multiple DNS settings.

I finally found my answer here This solution works perfectly but I’ll condense it below if you don’t want to follow the link.

The user ILS mentions that these symptoms are caused by a corrupted afd.sys file which is located at c:windowssystem32drivers. Either it is missing or infected.

A tool called Farbar System Scanner can be run on your Internet Services to verify the problem although you do not need to do this to try the fix.

Scan your system for another version of afd.sys and simply copy it over to the one in your driver folder

Next you need to modify the registry. Instructions are detailed in a post written by Broni here.

The easiest solution is to copy the Registry Entry from another PC that is working

If you get a permission problem when merging the Legacy_AFD, make sure you read Broni’s instructions on how to allow your user to change the permissions. For Windows 7, I used the following Broni written instructions:

  1. Start=>Run (alternatively use Windows key+R), type regedit and click OK.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetEnumRoot
  3. Right-Click Root and select Permissions…
  4. Click Advanced.
  5. Under Owner tab select the entry starting with you user name, example: Farbar(Farbar-PCFarbar)
  6. Put a check mark next to Replace owner on subcontainers and objects and click Apply and OK.
  7. Under Security type while Everyone is selected put a check mark in the box under Allow next to Full Control.
  8. Click Apply and OK.

As stated by the author of the post, after doing the above you will be able to merge Legacy_AFD.

Even though that post is old, it works like a charm, we were able to fix 5 computers today, all of them were Windows 7.

Following those instructions I was able to get the computer back on the network and the user back to work.

Exchange 2010 OWA Not Working

Problem:

I recently completed a fresh install of Exchange 2010 for a client. After moving a few mailboxes to the new server I wanted to test the OWA.

When I browsed to https://(server)/outlook web access it threw the normal SSL cert error but after I accepted the certificate the site would not display the normal Outlook Web Access logon page.

OWA Solution:

The solution is to install the IIS role service of Static Content.

After I installed the role service and restarted the site in IIS the Outlook Web Access logon page displayed correctly.

Tools needed

  • Windows system Image Manager “This is part of the WAIK installs”
  • Windows 7 Install.wim, Boot.wim (Found on your windows 7 installation media in the Sources folder)

Note: copy these files locally and remove the “Read-Only” Attribute from each .WIM

Building your answer file using Windows (SIM)

Be sure to open this application by using the “run as administrator” option

    1. Open the “Install.WIM” using the “File and Select windows” option within Windows (SIM) Figure 1

Note: This step may take a bit to mount this image file (You will be prompted for the Windows version you want to build the file for… Once complete you will see the Components and Packages retrieved from the WIM file.

Finally Validate your Answer file from a option under “Tools” and Save your Answerfile naming it unattend.xml for testing

  1. Once you have everything configured correctly, Copy or move your unattend.xml file to : C:windowssystem32sysprep
    1. To test open your command Prompt as an “Administrator” and change to the directory path above. Execute the following command sysprep /generalize /oobe /unattend:unattend.xml /shutdown
    2. Once your machine is turned back on it will go through the boot up process with a Sysprep that will prompt you to ONLY change the computer name. It will then Auto-login as the Administrator account so you can proceed with your final steps.

Summary

This walk-thru guides you through steps to do the following

  • Enable Administrator Account with a specific Password
  • Insert you Volume License
  • Name your Computer
  • Remove the need for a multi-part interaction

Android ActiveSync will not connect to Exchange 2010

I recently was having a problem setting up an Android phone for one of our clients who used Exchange 2010. I have set up at least 50 phones on this specific Exchange server so I was perplexed as to why this phone wouldn’t connect.

After running the Exchange Remote Connectivity Analyzer I found that ActiveSync was failing during the initial sync with a HTTP error code 500.

What needs to happen that you must include inheritable permissions from this object’s parent. Then the phone will sync. Here are the steps to achieve this. They are also listed in a Microsoft Technet article.

Solution:

  1. Open Active Directory Users and Computers
  2. On the menu at the top of the console, click View > Advanced Features.
  3. Locate and right-click the mailbox account in the console, and then click Properties
  4. Click the Security tab
  5. Click Advanced
  6. Make sure that the check box for “Include inheritable permissions from this object’s parent” is selected
  7. Close out

Your phone should now sync successfully.

This is a known issue with IE9 the following resolutions:

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Navigate to your RWW site
  3. Click Tools – Internet Option
  4. Next click the Security Tab
  5. Then click Trusted Sites
  6. After that, click the Sites button
  7.  Next, click Add
  8. Finally, click Close
  9. In the Address area of IE click the compatibility button as shown in the image

Windows 8 Prompts for SharePoint Login Continually

As our team gets new computers more of us are on Windows 8 and we noticed that Internet Explorer continually prompts for authentication when going to our SharePoint site. We have a solution to end this annoyance!

Internet Explorer Solution:

  1. Open IE
  2. Navigate to your SharePoint Site and login
  3. Click the Cog icon – Tools and choose internet options
  4. Next, click the Security Tab
  5. Then, click Local Intranet
  6. After that, click the Sites button
  7. Then, click the Advanced button
  8. Click Add
  9. Finally, close your way out of the dialog boxes
  10. Tada!

I hope this helps you end a very annoying problem. I know I’m happier!

Wake on LAN across local subnets/VLANs

Recently we had a client trying to Wake on LAN (WOL) across local subnets/VLANs. The WOL would only work on the local VLAN but not to other VLANs (or subnets) that were trunked out in other areas. The solution was a simple fix of a few commands on the local and remote subnet routing/switching devices.

Wake on LAN Solution:

  1. An IP Helper needed to be configured on the WOL packet sending network pointing to the receiving network.
    1. L1(config-if)#interface vlan 2 ? Interface of network you are sending packet from
    2. L1(config-if)#ip helper-address 172.16.3.2 ? Gateway of receiving network
  2. The IP protocol needed to be forwarded (in the case UDP port 7)
    1. L1(config)#ip forward-protocol udp 7
  3. An ACL needed to be configured as to only allow the WOL ports required
    1. L2(config)#access-list 101 permit udp any any eq 7 ? you can also specify host and/or destination instead using any any

    1. L2(config-if)#ip directed-broadcast 101 ? 101 references the ACL that allows/restricts the broadcasts going through. This rule enables translation of directed broadcasts to physical broadcasts on the network where the WOL target is located.

Repeat this process as needed for each network that needs to send/receive WOL packets.
